Every child deserves the chance to live life to the full. Every child should have access to safe surgery when they need it. But for too many children around the world, that’s not the reality.
Hospitals don’t have enough space, or the right equipment. Surgeons have to operate by torchlight, in crumbling buildings, with adult-sized tools. Too often they can’t get the right training to carry out the specialised operations children need.
Surgery saves and changes lives, but for too many children it’s not an option. Children aren’t just small adults. They need specialised care, with particular equipment, delivered by professionals with the right training. But this kind of care is often too far away, too expensive, too difficult to access.
When we create a Kids Operating Room, we enable local surgical teams to care for many more children, to do more complex surgery and to operate safely on younger and smaller patients. Kids get the chance to grow up healthy and live their lives to the full.
It’s incredible how much of a difference it has made. We can safely perform surgeries without fearing power cuts, saving countless lives.
When our first operating room opened in Uganda, we were inundated with requests to open more. We soon discovered that there was huge demand for focused support for children’s surgery. And that no one else was providing it. We now have operating rooms across Africa, Asia and Latin America, and we’re growing fast.
They’ll make it happen. Surgery made it possible.
